Bevendean Community Garden to Kingston 5th July 2025
Our last walk of this series was guided by Jessie Martelhof, who is a medical herbalist. During the course of the walk, Jessie introduced us to a range of wild medicinal plants and trees that were growing around the fields and hedgerows.
We looked at Mugwort, Ribwort Plaintain, Bramble, Hawthorn, and more. The walk covered the importance of correct identification of plants and how some of the plants we found might be used medicinally as well as some fascinating history and folklore about them. Jessie explained how to safely identify the wild plants and how we might use them for health and wellbeing.

About Jessie
Jessie is a qualified medical herbalist, she first encountered herbal medicine after visiting rural Jamaica aged 19 where she met people who used local plants as part of their everyday healthcare and who seemed to have a connection with and an understanding of the plants that grew around them. This sparked an interest which led her on a path of experimentation and self-study over many years – including an exploration of the native plant traditions of her own land as well as from around the world.
Wild Walks is a project supported by the National Trust and the Changing Chalk Community Grants Scheme, and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery Players.
